William Topel, for Columnist Guild News Bureau Apr. 18, 2006

Some of today's country music is following in the footsteps of yesterday's patriotic country & western stars. Besides Merle Haggard's recent album reviewed for this website, "Chicago Wind", featuring two patriotic singles, rising new country vocalist sensation Gretchen Wilson, hailing from heartland America small town Pocahontas, Illinois, has her new album, "All Jacked Up". This sophomore CD, from Sony BMG Music Entertainment/Epic Records, exhibits blends of traditional country, southern rock, & even jazz.

Her 2004 debut album, "Here For The Party", debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country album charts & #2 on the Top 200 Chart, setting unprecedented first week sales for any music artist of any genre in history (quadruple platinum also). This new album has debuted at #1 on both charts already. Gretchen co-wrote seven of the twelve songs on the new CD.

This second album has already produced two number one singles, "All Jacked Up" and "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today", but it's her next single that is now climbing the charts & garnering more radio airplay, "Politically Uncorrect". This song, written by Leslie Satcher, Danny Steagall, & Billy Henderson, summarily represents the feelings of many Americans & may be at odds with the practices of many of today's political leaders of both major parties. Long-time country singer-songwriter Merle Haggard joins Gretchen on this song, giving it more authenticity, as there is no doubt in people's minds where Merle stands about his love of America & it's working people. Here are this song's lyrics:

I'm for the low man on the totem pole
And I'm for the underdog God Bless his soul
And I'm for the guys still pulling third shift
And the single mom raisin' her kids
I'm for the preachers who stay on their knees
And I'm for the sinner who finally believes
And I'm for the farmer with dirt on his hands
And the soldiers who fight for this land

And I'm for the Bible and I'm for the flag
And I'm for the working man, me and Ol' Hag
I'm just one of many
Who can't get no respect
Politically uncorrect.

I guess my opinion is all out of style
Aw, but don't get me started cause I can get riled
And I'll make a fight for the forefather's plan
And the world already knows where I stand

(Repeat Chorus:)

Nothing wrong with the Bible, nothing wrong with the flag
Nothing wrong with the working man, me and Ol' Hag
We're just some of many who can't get no respect
Politically uncorrect
Politically uncorrect.

The life of 10 years-old William Thomas Emerson is forever changed when his family is killed when their home is struck by lightening. William eventually ends up at The Seven Stars Inn in Boston where he finds himself amidst the turbulent days leading up to America's Revolutionary War.

Written in the form of William's journal, this historical fiction provides the reader with a glimpse into young Mr. Emerson's life regarding events both mundane and profound. As a border at the Inn, William comes into contact with a committee of Patriots and assists them in a number of tasks essential to the survival of liberty in America such as aiding in the defection of a British office to the Colonial side and in ferreting out a spy from the ranks of the committee's own membership.

Crafted as a first person account, Denenberg does not gloss over incidents that would shock our contemporary sensibilities as might be the case in a more detached theoretical exposition. Neither does he sugarcoat the shortcomings of either side.

For example, not only does Denenberg depict a Redcoat pummeling an innocent bystander to death, but he also portrays a Patriot mob that vandalizes and burns down the house of a Tory sympathizer.

Of America's Founding Fathers, it has been said they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. This truth is movingly emphasized in the book's epilogue where it is revealed what ultimately happens to the characters and one learns some of them were called upon to give the last full measure of devotion.

In addressing the purpose behind the book, Denenberg writes, "The American Revolution, more than any other event in American history, has been presented to young readers as an abstract, artificial, distant, and disembodied occurrence involving old men who wore funny clothes and later became statues and oil paintings...I hoped to accomplish two things: to reveal ... what it was like to live in 1774 in Boston. And to bring the revolution to life by showing it affected ordinary people and how they affected it."

The Journal of William Thomas Emerson will help the reader better understand what those living at this period in American history had to endure and to more fully appreciate the gift of liberty those forefathers assisted in passing down to each one of us.

Former Iraqi General Sada delivers a riveting inside account of Saddam Hussein's tyranny, including confirmation of the existence and hiding of weapons of mass destruction. Despite being a Christian and refusing to join the Baath Party, Sada was promoted to Saddam's inner circle for his honest advice. Sada criticizes most countries and the United Nations (whose workers he accuses of accepting bribes) for their complicity in propagating Saddam's regime. But he strongly praises Operation Iraqi Freedom, pointing out that no other country would take the first step. The book has an unexpectedly religious angle, being slightly Christian-centric and paranoid over Muslim population growth in the West. Regardless, Sada blames Saddam for destroying Iraq, but remains hopeful the nation will have a chance to become a modern society, fulfilling its great historical legacy.

Book Description

He was Saddam Hussein's top military advisor . . . and a truth-teller in a regime where truth was relative. He was also a devout Christian in an anti-Christian country. For the first time, General Georges Sada shares his amazing journey ? and speaks of the military secrets he was asked to keep. Secrets that only those closest to Saddam would know. But God's work in General Sada's own life is no secret. From his years of covert military operations, to his dramatic conversations with Saddam and other world leaders, God has enabled Sada to make a difference, even when lives hung in the balance. In this exclusive book, the General paints a picture of Hussein, his regime, and his country, that is at once personal and truthful, compelling and sobering . . . guaranteed to draw national attention.

Dear Friends,

The column I wrote on Governor Lamm's speech, "How To Destroy America" was made into a video that is really excellent. Spread it to all your networks. This thing is even more chilling than when I wrote the story. Everything in this video is in the book based on the speech "Immigration's Unarmed Invasion: Deadly Consequences."

Clyde Wilson
Sep. 4, 2005

Basic Books

Literature about the South and Southern history is vast – largely because non-Southerners have always found the South interesting. The greatest part of this literature is written from the viewpoint of the outsider diagnosing sin (in the 19th century) or pathology (since). The assumption apparently is that any people who don't want to be like Massachusetts must be either sick or evil.

Some of the "authorities" who spend their time studying the South even say, strangely, that it does not exist – it is merely a delusion created by bigotry and pellagra – though nothing could be more obvious than that Southerners have a separate historical experience and culture.

Despite the overwhelming mass of negative and distorted literature, there are many books, old and new, that are sympathetic or even-handed and that convey real knowledge about the region that one good history book defines as "not quite a nation within the nation, but the next thing to it."....

Full article.

I have some of the books recommended by Wilson on my site also, but have included others that I have read:

I have only recently begun reading A History of the South by Francis Butler Simkins. I want to report that I am finding it entirely enjoyable, delightful, very fair and objective to both Northern and Southern cultures and values systems. Published in 1947, it is not the work of a southern apologist, though while Simkins grew up in Edgefield, SC, he got his doctorate from Columbia University in NYC. Clyde Wilson gives a brief thumbnail of the book in his below article. I urge anyone who has a sincere interest in American history to get their own copy and read it.

M15 and the David Shayler Affair

Edition: Hardcover
Here's David Shalyer's book announcement regarding the complicity of MI5 and MI6 in international terrorism with a word from the author at bottom. Leland

ANNIE MACHON, Former MI5 officer
Can we trust the secret state?
Summer 2005

In a world where our country is taken into an illegal war on flawed evidence, where people in the UK can be detained without trial on the word of the intelligence services, and where the threat of terrorist attack is a daily fear, we need to know that those responsible for Britain's security are really doing all they can to protect us. It's time for those in power to pull their heads out of the sand and listen to the evidence – and give MI5 and MI6 a radical overhaul.

Here, for the first time, Annie writes about her experiences at the heart of the secret state and what happens when you stand up to it. Her revelations about illegal intelligence operations, cover-ups to ministers, and particularly the MI6 funding of Al Qaeda terrorists will shock all of us who like to think that our security services are doing everything in their power to fight terrorism.

In the light of intelligence failures over 7/7 and the war in Iraq, can you afford to miss out on knowing how:

  • MI6 illegally paid tens of thousands of pounds to Al Qaeda to stage a coup in Libya. If the plot had succeeded it would have led to associates of Osama Bin Laden taking power in Libya, an oil rich state, paving the way for a US/UK invasion as happened in Iraq.

  • MI5 and MI6 let a known Libyan terrorist into Britain. They failed to recruit him, and by the services' own admission, allowed him to set up a terrorist network in this country;

  • An MI6 agent ran guns and explosives to religious extremists in India then claimed MI5 and Special Branch were responsible and the British government lobbied for his release;

  • MI6 tried to undermine the Lockerbie evidence in public blaming Iran and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command for the attack;

  • MI6 influences public opinion including planting made-up stories in the media. The book names two agents of influence;

  • MI5 bungled the investigation and prosecution of a spy who had admitted giving Nato defence secrets to the Soviet Union;

  • MI5 illegally accessed the accounts of and bugged a Guardian journalist while planning to arrest her daughter on trumped-up charges;

  • MI5 failed to stop four major terrorist attacks in Britain, even though it was in possession of reliable intelligence. It then lied to government about its failure to stop two of these attacks;

  • Ministers and judges failed to allow David to bring any evidence during his prosecution then denied the jury the right to acquit him on the grounds of justice. Two IRA members were acquitted at trial because telephone tap material confirming their guilt was not admissible as evidence.

  • MI5 bureaucracy put its own agents and the lives of the general public at enormous risk, when faced with Libyan plans for the biggest terrorist attack in history;

  • MI5 neglected to admit that one of its key agents was a 'bullshitter' and a fabricator in written evidence submitted to the Saville Enquiry into Bloody Sunday in an attempt to blame Martin McGuinness of Sinn Fein for the violence that day;

  • MI5 withheld vital documents indicating the innocence of the two people convicted of the Israeli Embassy bombing during their trial. They are still languishing in prison nine years after a blatant mistrial. One of the documents recorded a senior MI5 officers belief that the Israelis had bombed their own embassy;

  • MI5 carried out illegal operations against the left, including legitimate groups like CND and the trade unions;

  • Despite voting against the Official Secrets Act, Tony Blair has used it repeatedly since he came to power to persecute journalists, writers, activists and whistleblowers and to cover up the terrorist activities of the British intelligence services in Northern Ireland and abroad;

  • Lord Hutton failed to declare a conflict of interest in his handling of the enquiry into the death of Dr Kelly;

  • MI5 was woefully ill-prepared to take over operations against the IRA in Britain from the Metropolitan Police Special Branch. As a result, it put bombs down at a greater rate than before or since.

'This is the most important account of MI5 since the Cold War ended that we have; and maybe the best book about MI5 period'
