GODLY GOVERNMENT GIVES TRUE "HOMELAND SECURITY"

Michael A. Peroutka
Feb. 8, 2005

Dear Friends of the Constitutional Republic,

A recent "Time" magazine cover story (2/7/05) was about the 25 "most influential evangelicals in America." Among other things, this story asked the question: "What Does Bush Owe Them?" A smaller headline inside the magazine said that because the "Religious Right" helped re-elect Mr. Bush, "Christian conservatives want payback."

This "Time" story says "nothing matters more to religious conservatives that Bushís appointments to the courts." Dr. James Dobson is quoted as saying: "At the very top of the list is the judiciary, which we feel is out of control and threatening to religious liberty and to the institution of the family. That would be the most important thing to us because every other issue that we care about is linked, one way or another, to the courts."

Now, to be sure, what the courts do IS important. In many ways, many courts and judges ARE out of control and they DO threaten religious liberty. They do threaten the institution of the family. And Dr. Dobson is to be commended for raising this issue.

But, I believe the FIRST thing that should be MOST important to Christians is for all of those who hold positions in any civil government to obey and carry out Godís Law, to acknowledge the authority and Kingship of the Lord Jesus Christ Who has ALL power in Heaven and on earth. If this, by Godís grace, did happen, true justice would be done and, of course, judges and courts would not be "out of control" because they would be under Godís control.

Now, I say this not because I want to impose "my religion" on anybody. I say this about the vital necessity of Godly rulers because this is what God says. In Romans 13:3-6, God tells us this about civil government rulers:

"[They] are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing."

What this means, simply put, is that civil government, whether it is national, state, or local, is established by God. And the express, sole purpose of those who hold positions in civil government is, as ministers, to administer, to carry out, to enforce, Godís Law, period.

Loosely defined --- though I donít like the label; itís too simplistic --- I am also a member of the "Religious Right" in the sense that I am a conservative Christian. But, unlike many of those mentioned in "Time" magazine, I expect no "payback" from President Bush.

The only thing I want from Mr. Bush is for him to obey God and give us what God and His only begotten Son command --- Godly government. And I want this because I love my country. To do otherwise, invites Godís judgment and wrath on our nation. As He warns us in Psalm 127: "Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."

For God, Family, & the Republic,
