A THANKSGIVING MESSAGE
Loren Leman
State of Alaska Lt. Governor
Juneau, AK
Nov. 23, 2005
Carolyn and I, with our family, wish you a great Thanksgiving. This uniquely American holiday is observed in many ways, but for most it is a time for families and friends to come together around a meal and give thanks. For many in Alaska it also means basketball at the Great Alaska Shootout.
In 1621, William Bradford, Governor of Plymouth, Massachusetts, proclaimed our nation’s first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims in this colony held a three-day feast to celebrate their survival and a bountiful harvest. A year after crossing the Atlantic Ocean to seek religious freedom they stood at half their original number. Many might not have survived their second winter if they hadn’t been helped by Squanto, a young Patuxent Indian.
As we gather in relative security to celebrate Thanksgiving, nearly 150,000 Americans are guarding our freedom in countries overseas. Many of these are Alaskans. They will not be able to be with their families. Their Thanksgiving dinner may be eaten in a tent, in a Stryker vehicle, on board an aircraft carrier, or even in a military hospital. If you would like to learn more about what you can do for our military, please visit a new feature on my website called Support The Troops.
God bless you and your family this Thanksgiving.
