WEEKLY STATE PRAYER FOCUS FOR ALASKA
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE STATE OF ALASKA
Bob Sperlazzo
Submitted by Chuck Pierce
Dec. 12, 2004
I am forwarding our USSPN Weekly State Prayer Focus for ALASKA (Dec. 12 - 18, 2004). Mary Glazier, our Apostolic State Coordinator for Alaska and member of the USSPN National Apostolic Team, submitted the following focus and state history.
Blessings,
Chuck D. Pierce
A Brief History of the State of Alaska
Ancient of Days (in search of) deep calls unto deep (Psalms 42:7)
The largest, coldest and most northerly state, Alaska is the only U.S. territory that once belonged to Russia, and it is by far the closest to Russia: only 55 miles separates the U.S. and the territory that was once the U.S.S.R., at the Bering Strait.
Alaska was discovered by Vitus Bering, in 1725 as he sailed near her coast looking for a Northeast Passage. Alaska, however, was shrouded in fog and was hidden from his ship, Gabriel. Criticized for not having actually seen the coast, Bering set out again in 1741. Bering had two vessels specially built for this expedition – St. Peter and St. Paul. These two ships became separated, but the ships’ logs show that they arrived in Alaska within a day of each other in July 1741.
Gabriel, the angel of God, was sent to Daniel to explain the vision of the ram and the he-goat (Daniel 8). Gabriel told Daniel “for at the end of time of the end shall be the vision” (Daniel 8:17b). Gabriel also talked with Daniel about the prediction of the seventy weeks (Daniel 9:21-27). Gabriel also announced the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11), and of the Messiah (Luke 1:26). He described himself in the words to Zacharias, “I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee” (Luke 1:19) 2
Bering’s ship, Gabriel, announced to the world that there was a great land across the sea, as the angel Gabriel had made announcements to the world. Alaska was formally discovered by two ships named after apostles – St. Peter and St. Paul.
MILITARY OCCUPATION AND THE FORGOTTEN WAR
Alaska was thrust into World War II when Japanese forces bombed Dutch Harbor and Unalaska on the Aleutian Chain on June 3-4, 1942. The 42 people living on Attu were taken prisoner when the Japanese invaded, surprising them as they came out of church on June 7, 1942. Taken prisoner, they were taken to Japan and forced to work digging clay. It was a full year before any one knew what had happened to them, and in the end only 25 survived. The Aleuts from Attu were held prisoners near Otaru, Japan for three years. In July, 1942, the remainder of the Aleut people were taken to internment camps in Southeast Alaska until their return in April 1945. The Aleuts were returned to only four of the nine islands they were taken from.
On Amchitka island once adequate antiaircraft guns were in place and fighters could land, enemy action ceased. The Japanese were finally ejected from the Aleutians only after 15 months of arduous operations hampered by shortages afloat, ashore, and in the air...not to mention the almost insuperable obstacles of weather and terrain.
In 1988, Congress passed the Title 50, Appendix – War and National Defense: Restitution for World War II Internment of Japanese-Americans and Aleuts. This document recognized that there was “no remedy for the injustices suffered by the Aleuts during World War II except an Act of Congress providing appropriate compensation for those losses which are attributable to the conduct of the United States forces and other officials and employees of the United States.”
The war years irrevocably changed Alaska. In the natural, war with its warrior mindset changed Alaska not only when she became a state, but also during World War II. We see that twice (two being the number of witness) Alaska has – in the natural – been a warrior state.
- When Alaska was occupied as a military district for ten (10) years (1867 – 1877).
During World War II Alaska was occupied by the enemy not only at Kiska, but also on Attu island.
We prophecy to the State of Alaska and declare to its people that the warrior mindset will change the spiritual realm throughout Alaska. We call out the warrior spirit resident within the people of Alaska:
- That the people would be skilled warriors of the kingdom of the Most High God.
- That these skilled warriors would operate in wisdom, power, and might.
GENERAL OVERVIEW:
About one-quarter of Alaska’s people are natives - Eskimo in the north, Athabascan in the interior; and Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian in the south. The Tlingits are famous for their carved totem poles.
Alaska grew up with the airplane, and flying is the chief means of transportation. Alaska has more private planes and pilots, per capita, than any other state, and jet service links it with Seattle and Chicago, as well as Asia.
Alaska has vast natural resources: the Russians found valuable furs, and men of many nations made fortunes from silver, gold, platinum, copper and timber. Alaska has the largest coal reserves of any state. The famous Gold Rush of 1897 was surpassed by the Oil Rush of 1957, and today Alaska’s fish - salmon, King crab, shrimp, and halibut - are one of its richest resources. Its big game - bear, moose and caribou - and its untouched natural beauty attract many visitors. Alaska has over three million lakes. Half of Alaska’s population is concentrated in the Seward-Anchorage-Fairbanks region, which is served by the railroad. The potential resources of remote regions are still being assessed. Alaska is the nation’s newest - and last- frontier.
ALASKA Prayer Focus
This scripture has been given for Alaska: "Violence shall no more be heard in your land, devastation or destruction within your borders, but you shall call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise"(Is. 60:18). Keeping this scripture and prophetic declaration before us, please join us in prayer over the following specific prayer needs for our State.
- Alcoholism is at an all-time high in Alaska. Please pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will break the back of addictions in our state.
- A spirit of murder seems to be loosed in Alaska right now with relatives killing relatives. Please pray against this violent and that its root would be exposed and destroyed.
- Suicides are rising once again. Please stand with us in defeating this terrible destruction in our land.
Some additional prayer requests for our State are:
- A youth conference is being planned for 2005. Please pray for a visitation of the Holy Spirit upon our youth, with an accompanying call to ministry. God has promised many missionaries would go out of Alaska all over the world. Our young people have a call on their lives to move in signs and wonders.
- The apostolic and prophetic leadership of the state is beginning to come together. Pray that we'll accurately identify and connect with the leaders from all parts of the Body of Christ.
- Pray for the release of finances for Kingdom work.
- Pray for the governmental leaders of our state:
Governor: Frank Murkowski
Lieutenant Governor: Loren Leman
Senators: Ted Stevens, Lisa Murkowski
Congressman: Don Young,
Anchorage’s Mayor: Mark Begich
At our last Windwalkers Conference, a vision was given that painted war horses were released from heaven for all those in attendance. Many people had visions of their horses and great excitement filled the auditorium as each realized that they were called to ministry and equipped by the Lord Himself. Please pray that they will step out of their comfort zone and begin to function as warriors in the kingdom with wisdom, being led by the Spirit and not by their imaginations.
