THINK-ISRAEL

Bernice Lipkin
Sep - Oct 2003

THINK-ISRAEL features essays and commentaries that provide context for current events in Israel. We try to make sense of what's going on.

We aim at being somewhere between a magazine and a blog. A blog - short for weblog - is a website run by a single writer or several writers with informal pieces and a very personal, sometimes a unique, way of looking at the world.

We have new articles on the think-israel.org website. Please take a look.

This is what's in the September-October issue:

Several of the featured essays analyze why the Road Map and its previous avatars failed and why it will continue to fail.

  • "WHY THE PEACE PROCESS CAN'T WORK AND SHOULD BE ABANDONNED" by Robert Locke;
  • "THERE IS ONLY A MILITARY SOLUTION" by Ariel Natan Pasko;
  • "TWELVE BAD ARGUMENTS FOR A STATE OF PALESTINE" by Patricia J. Berlyn;
  • "INDIA AND PAKISTAN - A Cautionary Tale For Israel and Palestine" by Jeffrey Weiss;
  • "ALL IS NOT LOST" by Frank Gaffney, Jr.;
  • "WHERE ARE THE MODERATE ARABS?" by Michael Anbar, Ph.D.;
  • "VIEWING ISLAM CLEAR. VIEWING ISLAM MUDDY" by Emanuel A. Winston;
  • "THE 'RIGHT OF RETURN' DEBATE REVISITED" by Max Abrahms; and
  • "HOLOCAUST IN PROGRESS" by Yashiko Sagamori.

These next essays talk about what Israel must do to reestablish its unique identity.

  • "JEWISH NATIONAL STRATEGY" by Professor Paul Eidelberg;
  • "THE G.O.D. MANDATE" by Beth Goodtree;
  • "TO CREATE A JEWISH STATE OF ISRAEL" by Moshe Feiglin;
  • "HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?" by Arlene Peck;
  • "THE UN AND THE ASSAULT ON ISRAEL'S LEGITIMACY: Implications Of The Roadmap" by Anne Bayefsky;
  • "ACADEMIC FREEDOM AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN ISRAEL'S UNIVERSITIES DURING THE OSLO DECADE: 1993-2003" by Professor Arieh Zaritsky; and
  • "VIEW FROM THE ASYLUM" by Elyakim HaEtzni.

If promoting the Peace Plans have not and can not bring peace, what will? One idea that is gaining in popularity is Population Exchange, transferring the Arabs out of Israel as the second stage of a process that began when Jews were forced out of Arab countries in the 1940s. These essays address this plan.

  • "PARTITION VERSUS POPULATION EXCHANGE" by Richard H. Shulman;
  • "TRANSFER: A MORAL DISCOURSE" by Boris Shusteff; and
  • "THE THIRD RAIL OF MIDDLE EAST POLICY" by Ruth King.

These essays discuss two of the terrorist groups that prey on Israel.

  • "HIZBALLAH'S WEST BANK FOOTHOLD" by Matthew Levitt;
  • "HIZBOLLAH INTERNATIONAL" by Lewis Lipkin;
  • "ON HAMAS and "FREEDOM FIGHTERS: The View From International Law" by Professor Louis Rene Beres.

These essays examine how anti-Israel bias is spread in America by the media and other gateways of the public's access to information.

  • "FRIEDMAN'S UNREALITY PRINCIPLE" by David Sobel;
  • "SUCKERED BY THE ARABS: Are Jewish and Christian Pro-Israel Groups Being Suckered By The Arabs?" by Lee Kaplan;
  • "RUTGERS' SUKKOT HATEFEST" by Merav Zarifa; and "
  • THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, The P.A.'s Pal" by N. Leonard Tolkan.

This next essay recounts an unusual and fascinating way to spend the High Holidays.

  • "CHINA DIARY: Settling Down In Wuchan. L'Shana Tova From Beijing." by Marion D.S. Dreyfus.

And, finally, the Readers' Blog-Ed page. This page is updated every few days and accessed by month.

We provide links to websites that supply accurate background information and news relating to Israel.

Do look at the web site.

And please, if you have a blog-ed piece or a comment or commentary, contact the website. Write to comments@think-israel.org

Pieces for THINK-ISRAEL should be informative and accurate. Fortunately, those of us who are pro-Israel can show our love of Israel without distorting the truth. We don't need to play by the rules laid down by the Arab-favoring media, which distorts the news and omits important items of information.
