- STOP SPIES ON YOUR COMPUTER
Submitted by Webmaster
August 12, 2003
Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too :)

- FARM AID STATEMENT ON MAD COW DISEASE
From FARM AID
June 20, 3003
Farm Aid Renews Call for Food Production Systems that Ensure Safe Food and Strengthen Family Farms
In the wake of news reports of Mad Cow Disease in Canada, Farm Aid renews its call to consumers and policy makers alike to support farm practices and farm policies that help ensure safe food and strengthen local family farms. The discovery of Mad Cow in North America is both a wake-up call and an opportunity to take positive steps to support food production systems that are local, sustainable, and safe.
Mad Cow Disease
Mad Cow Disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE, is a disease that affects the brain and central nervous system of cattle. Cattle most likely become infected when they eat contaminated ruminant feed - feed that contains animal parts from BSE-infected cattle. Although rare, humans who eat infected beef products can become infected with a variant of BSE called Creutzfeld-Jakob disease. The practice of feeding cattle ruminant feed, which was commonly used on the large factory-farm feed lots for many years, was banned in the United States in 1997. To date, no evidence of BSE has been found in US-raised cattle.
You can take practical steps today to strengthen safe, local and sustainable food produced by American family farmers. Please join Farm Aid in the following actions:
Policy Steps
The USDA must take all necessary steps to ensure full compliance of the ban on ruminant feed. In addition, the USDA should immediately implement the Country of Origin Labeling law passed by Congress so that consumers can choose US-raised beef at their local markets. Congress should also increase funding for policies that strengthen local and regional marketing cooperatives of sustainably raised livestock, such as grass-fed and organic meat.
Please call your elected officials in Washington to urge immediate implementation of the Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) program. You can reach your US Senator and member of Congress by calling the Capitol Hill Switchboard: (202) 224-3121.
Consumer Support
Consumers can use their food dollars to support local family farms and safe food production. To find a nearby source to purchase family farm-produced, grass-fed or organic meat, you can do a zip code search from the following web site:
http://www.localharvest.org/beef.jsp
Please support Americašs family farmers, and their role in producing safe and healthful food for all of us.
Sincerely,
The Farm Aid Staff

- CUSTOMER SERVICE ALERT - "YOUR CREDIT"
From EDITOR
April 23, 2003
EDITOR'S PREFACE:
Per the prerecorded announcement mentioned below, the "public" is not
necessarily correct & "ANYONE" is not technically accurate & your
information availability is still limited but YOU CAN STILL OPT OUT OF MOST
DISCLOSURES by following the sequence mentioned below anyway.
Your personal credit information goes public starting July 1, 2003.
The four major credit bureaus in the US (Equifax, TransUnion, etc.) will be
allowed to release credit information, mailing addresses, telephone numbers,
etc., to ANYONE who requests it. If you do not want to be included in this
release of your personal information, you can call
1-888-567-8688. Once the message starts you will want option #2 (even
though option #1 refers to this email, push #2) and then option #3.
Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two-year period.
Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option, which opts you
out FOREVER. You should receive their paperwork in the mail confirming the
"opting out" in less than one week after making the call.
Pass this message on to all in your address book, friends and family.
