Feb. 28, 2003

CONTENTS:

  • Phone address verification system
  • AWARE Schools program receives regional Red Cross award
  • Municipal employees pledge $165,353 to local organizations

Phone address verification system

To help ensure emergency responders are provided accurate address information from 9-1-1 calls, citizens should check their address using the Municipality of Anchorage's new residential phone verification number.

When citizens call 565-6789 from their home phone, they will be able to confirm what physical address the 911 system has for them.

It is important to note the system will not work from cell phones, some business lines and from Girdwood.

AWARE Schools program receives regional Red Cross award

Proving Anchorage is one of the most prepared cities in the Nation, the Municipality of Anchorage and the South Central Alaska Chapter of the American Red Cross won the Mountain Pacific Region Best Practices award for the AWARE Schools program. Through the AWARE Schools program, students are taught how to safely respond to incidents like earthquake, home fires and wildfire.

Since October 2002, the AWARE Schools team has visited 31 of the city's 58 elementary schools with a message of personal safety during emergencies. More than 3,500 students have been taught lessons from this basic safety curriculum. The program is one component of the city's AWARE (Anchorage Watchful Alert and Ready for Emergencies) campaign which was developed to teach Anchorage citizens how to prepare for and respond to disasters.

Municipal employees pledge $164,700 to local organizations

Working with United Way and Anchorage Share agencies, the Municipality of Anchorage has raised $164,700 to go to local social agencies like United Way, Covenant House Alaska, Girl Scouts, Hospice of Anchorage and many more. That is almost 112% of the city's stated goal of $147,240. Thanks to all the employees who participated in this year's drive.
