(The following letter concerning our open meeting laws has already been widely distributed. If you agree with the message content, please consider doing two things:
- Forward this entire page to EVERYONE on your email list that lives in Alaska.
- Write your own letter (or borrow mine), and distribute it to EVERYONE !
It's time for everyone concerned about our run-a-muck government, to speak up and let your feelings be known! Call or write your elected representatives today!)
The original intent of our open meeting law is clearly stated in the Alaska Statutes:
- "the people of this state do not yield their sovereignty to the agencies that serve them;
- the people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know;
- the people's right to remain informed shall be protected so that they may retain control over the instruments they have created."
In 1994, the Alaska Legislature voted to exempt themselves from those powerful words quoted above. Does this mean the public no longer wishes to control "the instrument we created" or that we have "yielded our sovereignty to the agencies that are supposed to serve us"?
When the legislature exempted themselves from provisions of the open meeting statutes, a conscious decision was made to restrict what the public should know. This action was wrong then, and still is today.
What is the legislature hiding behind those closed doors? Have partisan politics and special interest lobbyists gained complete control of our state? Why is the legislature not completely transparent in conducting our business? After all it is OUR business the legislature has been elected to take care of!
The public's right to be fully informed should never have been infringed upon in the first place. In the interest of good honest representative government, this legislature should open those caucus doors, and begin conducting our business in the light of day once again.
Please do the right thing this session, by immediately removing legislative exemption to the open meeting laws. Once reopened, they should never be closed again!
