Peratrovich Dedication
This Sunday, February 16, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. the City will honor civil rights leaders, Roy and Elizabeth Peratrovich by dedicating Historic City Hall Park (located at 4th & "E") as Roy and Elizabeth Peratrovich Park.
The Peratroviches were instrumental in helping to persuade the Alaska Territorial Legislature of 1945 to pass the first anti-discrimination law in the country which outlawed discrimination in housing, public accommodations, and restaurants in Alaska.
City adds police presence to streets
According to National Homeland Security intelligence reports, cities around the country should be on extra alert for possible terrorist attacks due to war tension with Iraq and the end of the hajj, a Muslim holy period. Intelligence reports do not give indication of any special threat against Anchorage. However, consistent with national readiness postures, Anchorage has responded with a minor increase in its police patrols through the weekend.
E-911 Task Force begins work of recommendations
Having met eight times, the E-911 Task Force has begun its work writing an interim report of recommendations for the City to improve its emergency response to 911 calls. The City is working diligently to improve any data, personnel and system weaknesses identified. On Tuesday, February 11, the Assembly approved a bond package to go before the voters April 1 to purchase the next phase of computers for the dispatch center.
MUNIversity
Next week's MUNIversity program will discuss the City's "checkbook." In 2001, the Municipality of Anchorage mailed out more than 154,000 tax bills and collected approximately $280,000,000, on behalf of General Government and the Anchorage School District. Tax revenues collected provide primary funding for city services like public safety, education, roads and transportation, health and human services and cultural and recreational services.
How can taxpayers be assured that they are getting the most "bang for their buck?" This lecture will describe how budgets are created, how the priorities for local government services are determined, how government spending is monitored and who manages local government's "checkbook." Most importantly, it will provide an overview of how the city holds itself accountable for translating each dollar spent into valued results through the use of our Investing for Results! The program is at the Loussac Library, Noon - 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18.
Have a Safe Holiday Weekend,
George
