I don't know if you see the Washington Times' Insight magazine or the New American, but both contain some recent information and articles that I am confident will interest you. The December 3, 2001 Insight has two articles, entitled "Fidel May Be Part of Terror Campaign" by Martin Arostegui (pages 16-18) and "Iran Cosponsors Al-Qaeda Terrorism" by Kenneth R. Timmerman (pages 19-21 and page 39) which are packed with names, dates, times, and analysis.

The December 17, 2001 New American underscores the information presented on Castro by Arostegui in Insight in a brief article on page 5 entitled "Top Intelligence Analyst Arrested as Cuban Spy." Like the Insight story, it connects Ana Belen Montes, the Defense Intelligence Agency's Cuban DGI mole, to possible 911 activities, and alleges that a Castro agent met Mohammed Atta in Miami. Insight goes into much detail about Castro's appearance at the University of Tehran last May, where he is quoted as telling the Islamic students gathered that, "Together we will bring America to its knees." The article also mentions the role of Cuban Vice-President Carlos Lage in opening a biotechnological research-and-development plant in Iran a year ago, prior to the Castro appearance in Tehran in May.

You may also be interested in the New American story entitled, "The Power Behind Bin Laden" by William F. Jasper in the December 31, 2001 edition (pages 10-15). It goes into great detail about an international summit of terrorists in Khartoum, Sudan in March-April 1995, followed by a summit in Tehran in June 1996. One particular piece of interesting information mentioned by the author about the latter gathering involves a Dr. Mahdi Chamran Savehi:

"Out of this terror summit [June 1996--Tehran] came the new HizbAllah International, headed by the Committee of Three. The Committee members were Osama bin Laden, Imad Mughaniyah, and Ahmad Salah--very important players, but not the ultimate source of terrorist power. Over this 'top' Committee of Three is Dr. Mahdi Chamran Savehi, Iran's chief of External Intelligence and supervisor of its global terror operations. Mahdi Chamran and his brother Mustafa were both educated in the United States. Active in radical-left politics in the 1960s in California, they established a Marxist front known as the Muslim Students' Association of America and an Iranian terrorist organization called Red Shiism.

"In Bin Laden [Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America], Yossef Bodansky notes that since 1968 Mahdi Chamran 'had served as an active Islamist terrorist and intelligence operative for radical Palestinians and their Soviet sponsors. In the meantime he received a Ph. D. in nuclear physics.'"

December 2001 and January 2002

Hi everyone,

I was at home in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday, Sept. 11th, nervous and excited about my new album being released that morning. I heard a plane fly low over my building (too low it seemed), I heard what I thought was a very big truck backfiring, and then a few minutes later I looked out my window and saw one of the World Trade Center buildings on fire. I didn't understand what I was seeing. I had been a few blocks away from the World Trade Center just the day before doing a radio interview. Then I turned on the news and began to understand, although it was all pretty incomprehensible. A few minutes later my husband rushed in the front door from work, and throughout that day and the following days, in our apartment less than a mile from ground zero, we experienced the fear, disbelief, horror and sadness that the rest of the world was feeling. It's taken me till now to write to you about all of this.

One of the most poignant events for me personally was that on Friday 9/14 I got a phone call from Belfast, Northern Ireland, from George Jones, a wonderful radio host I've worked with over there. He wanted to know if I'd be willing to go live on the radio and talk about what it was like in New York. When we were on I tried to describe what I was experiencing, and he told me how devestated the Northern Irish people were by what had happened and that their hearts and prayers were with all New Yorkers and all Americans. I can't tell you how moved I was. After all, these are people who know what it's like to live with terror every day.

That week I also thought alot about the fact that I had played at the World Trade Center, in the plaza, twice over the summer. Both gigs were so wonderful, the first with my band in July, the second singing harmony with John Gorka in August. Both nights were beautiful New York nights, the weather was perfect, the audiences were warm and friendly. And John's concert was, I believe, the last musical event ever held there. I'll never forget those nights.

With all of this going on, it's been a very strange time to have a new album out and do concerts to promote it, but that's what I've done, I guess in the spirit of moving on with life and the necessity of continuing and honoring what has been set in motion, and I also believe that music heals and connects us with one another. There have been many nights since Sept. 11th when the audience sang along on "By Way of Sorrow" and I was moved to tears. And so many people have come up to me after shows and said the nicest, most supportive things. I'm so grateful.

I've had some genuinely wonderful times at my shows in the last few weeks. Some highlights: rocking out with Nina Gerber on guitar in California, with my dad sitting in on piano on a couple of his songs; doing some shows with John Gorka in Alaska, with my husband along, where the scenery was so stunning I didn't mind that it was 10 degrees, and eating strange things like reindeer sausage and ostrich stick, and then feeling guilty about eating the ostrich stick when we saw what must have been yard-long ravens snacking nearby; playing with Ben Butler on guitar and throwing songs at him he'd never even heard and watching him totally tear them up; doing a co-bill with Catie Curtis in New York and having her sneak up behind me during "Scorpion" and start singing the most beautiful harmony while my eyes were closed; and the whole audience singing "House of the Rising Sun" with me in Denver at a venue that used to be a brothel.

I thought you'd also like to know that my album, Every Single Day, has been very, very well received by critics and radio. I got great reviews in the Associated Press (4 stars), United Press International, The Financial Times, and the College Music Journal, to name a few. And thanks so much to all of you who bought it; it's selling even better than my last album!

Happy new year to all of you!

I just got back from the U.K. and Ireland where I had a wonderful tour, I'll write more about that in the next week or two. In the meantime, this is just a quick note to let you know where I'll be in the next few weeks.

A couple of highlights: on Jan. 12 I'll be playing with the great Duke Levine in Lexington, MA. This'll be our first gig together in over a year, and the first time we've ever played the song we wrote together, "Every Single Day" in a concert.

Also, I'll be part of a mini tour with John Gorka, Cliff Eberhardt, and Cheryl Wheeler in the midwest in January (see below for details). Expect lots and lots of harmonies and jokes about bodily functions.

And I'll be playing with the wonderful guitar player Ben Butler at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival on Jan. 26 and in New York City on 1/31.

Take care everyone!

To: Joseph Farah

Mr. Farah--I am glad that you ran the story on your lead page about Gordon Thomas's Seeds of Fire. I have now finished the book and will be reviewing it for the Lutheran weekly Christian News and for

I know that you are an honest supporter of the State of Israel, but I believe you will be disturbed by the information presented in Mr. Thomas's book about the role of the Israeli Mossad in assisting the Chinese CSIS in illegally obtaining the infamous Enhanced PROMIS software and utilizing it to steal American nuclear secrets at Los Alamos in New Mexico. This includes, as you know, the theft of the W-88 Trident nuclear warhead design. Mr. Thomas's book also amplifies information earlier mentioned in his book, Gideon's Spies--The Secret History of the Mossad, about the late British media magnate Robert Maxwell's role as a Mossad agent, and his mysterious death at sea near the Canary Islands, allegedly at the hands of the Mossad in November of 1991. Mr. Maxwell apparently played a direct role in illegally marketing an Israeli doctored version of PROMIS to Communist China, which enabled them to carry out their operation against Los Alamos. Rafi Eitan and Colonel Sella, both directly involved with the Pollard espionage affair directed against the United States, were linked to Maxwell, PROMIS, and the Chinese situation.

Another angle which I find disturbing--that such names as Edwin Meese, Leonard Garment, and the late Texas U. S. Senator John Tower play a role in this story. Mr. Thomas claims that John Tower was Robert Maxwell's inroad into Los Alamos and served on the board of directors of at least one Maxwell organization (Macmillan).

The information in Gideon's Spies and Seeds of Fire suggests to me that there is an entire dimension of Israeli intelligence activity directed against the national assets and interests of the United States that should not be ignored or justified. The Pollard case and the recently disseminated information on the PROMIS scandal by both Gordon Thomas and Insight magazine are both indications that the American conservative movement generally, and the Christian Right specifically, need to reassess our policy vis a vis the State of Israel and the role played by a foreign political lobby in influencing the American media and purchasing the allegiances of key figures in both of our major political parties.

All the best. WND is doing a great job with a lot of great links. I was Howard Phillips's candidate in the U. S. Senate race in Delaware last year. It was a lot of fun. You can find some of my book reviews under "Articles" at My review of Gideon's Spies is there and I also have one of Sandra Mackey's great work, The Iranians: Persia, Islam, and the Soul of a Nation.

In Christ,
