MESSAGE FROM THIRDAGE.COM

Mary Furlong
ThirdAge Founder
Sep. 13, 2001

Dear ThirdAge Community Members,

We awoke this morning to news that we never want to hear: There had been a sudden attack upon the major arteries of work, commerce and transportation in our political and commercial capital cities. Each of us has a friend who has traveled to or from these places. The thought of my friend's children coming home and not finding their mother is the scene playing vividly in my mind.

Each of us is struggling to understand how this could happen and what might happen next. Many of us are planning airline trips somewhere in the near future. Many of us have children in faraway places -- an airline trip away from us. My son called from Australia when he first heard the news. This is not a national crisis -- it is a global one.

More than an attack on our cities and our institutions, it is an attack on our nation's soul. Much like the assassination of John F. Kennedy or the Oklahoma City bombing, this day's events will change our lives forever. We must first take this time to pray for the families and friends who have been devastated by this event. We must take a moment to think about our world -- and our need to find a better way to resolve its conflicts and hatreds.

Share those thoughts and discuss our national course of action in our news forums.

We have also opened a forum in which to share any thoughts on how we -- as individuals or a nation -- can provide support to those touched by this tragedy. Shireen Burns will be moderating both of these discussions.

In expressing our thoughts and prayers, let us strive to become a source of solace for each other as we try to grapple with this difficult and challenging time.

My heart is with you today. I will see you in the forums.

With respect and care,

Mary Furlong
