OIL COMPANIES AND LEGISLATORS
By Ray Metcalfe
July 22, 2000
Unhappy
with the closed primary, the Governor, and a legislature controlled
by Oil companies and the Religious Right? Then checkout the Republican
Moderate Party. The Republican Moderate Party is an entirely NEW political
party!
We are
NOT associated with the REPUBLICAN PARTY OF ALASKA.
In November
of '98, we earned recognition as a separate political party and secured
a place on the ballot for our future candidates. We split from the
Republicans and formed a new Party for three reasons.
1. To
create a new home for those Republicans unwilling to stay in a Party
that has been taken over by people from the Religious Right who are
determined take away many of our individual freedoms.
2. The
Republicans closed their primary, to make it much harder for anyone
to win the Republican nomination to be on the general election ballot,
without first pledging to vote for the social agenda of the Religious
Right. The Republican Moderates believe that all primaries should
be open to all voters.
3. Ironically,
the Republican Party sold its soul to get the money to get their right
wing candidates elected. They, and most of their elected legislators
take enormous amounts of money from an oil industry willing to fund
any campaign for any politician willing to give them our resources
for less than they are worth. We couldn't in good conscience remain
part of the machine that helps them stay in power.
The Republican
led legislature has given away oil leases that were worth hundreds
of millions of dollars. They gave them away for free, without competitive
bid, to oil companies raising money for Republicans. Giving away of
Alaska's resources, combined with billions lost due to unwarranted
tax breaks, has resulted in a "Budget Gap." Rather than demand our
fair share for our resources to make up the difference, the elected
Republicans are proposing raids on our Permanent Fund and new ways
to tax you. In the mean time, their un-elected Party leaders spent
more time at their last convention hammering out their Party Platform
statement on bestiality, homosexuality, fornication, and adultery
than they spent on the subject of how to balance our state budget.
(Bestiality,
that's sex with animals! So much for part three of the Sourdough Tests.)
With
your support, we can change things. Now that the Republican Moderates
have achieved party status we are now positioned to deliver a wake
up call from YOU, to the legislature. Please consider our Party's
commitment to open meetings and honest government and lend your support
to our candidates, all of whom have contracted in writing, to abide
by our Party's commitments and principles. Make your vote count! VOTE
Republican Moderate!
Our
Party Principles read as follows:
- Pursuit
of Happiness. The right to live your life as you wish limited only
by your obligation to respect the rights and freedoms of others in
their pursuit of their own vision of happiness.
- Right
to Privacy. Privacy in one's home, privacy between patients and doctors,
privacy in any area of ones personal life. Government has no business
intruding, uninvited, into the conduct of personal decisions over
one's own destiny.
- Level
Playing Field. A government that ensures all persons an equal chance
to improve their lot in life through fruits of their labor. Zero tolerance
for political corruption or favoritism among competing individuals
or industries.
- Equal
Rights. Equal rights for all citizens, no exceptions, and no exclusions.
- A Compassionate
Government. A government that responds to the needs of its citizens
with a balanced provision of safety nets, helping hands and boosts,
when appropriate, all mixed with a fair measure of tough love that
demands personal responsibility from those who are able.
- Intellectual
Integrity. Republican Moderates will always put the People's interests
before the Party's interests. Good ideas will be applauded, regardless
of which party proposes them. Wrong doings will be judged for what
they are rather than blown up or minimized because of the party affiliation
of the person who did wrong.
- Pledge
of Honesty. Our candidates come with a bit of a warranty. For the
privilege of running under our banner, we require our candidates to
agree in writing, to abide by the above principals and promise to
step down if the Party ever finds that they have been dishonest, unethical,
or strayed too far from our principles. It's our "CONTRACT WITH ALASKA"
and our candidate's "BADGE OF HONOR."
Our candidates
come with far more assurance that:
"What
you see is what you get!"
We,
as a Party, require all of our candidates to promise in writing to abide
by our "CONTRACT WITH ALASKA." Our CONTRACT consists of two parts:
(1)
A promise to measure the worth of legislative proposals by the degree
to which they uphold our "PARTY PRINCIPLES."
(2)
A "PLEDGE OF HONESTY," promising to step down if the Party ever finds
out that they have been dishonest, unethical, or strayed too far from
our principles.
The
REPUBLICAN MODERATE PARTY will vigorously pursue the ouster of any legislator
found in violation of our "CONTRACT WITH ALASKA".
Just
like the little engine that could !!!
We
don't need a majority to have impact. We only need enough seats to deny
each of the other parties a majority! Our Republican Moderates can then
select the brightest minds from both sides of the isle, to form a coalition
absent radicals from the Left or the Right.
Republican
Moderates favor an open tolerant government. We're best described as
moderately conservative on fiscal issues and moderately liberal on social
issues, with a twist of Libertarianisms.
We
support choice, equal rights without exclusion, and a level playing
field without tolerance for corruption or favoritism. We want a principled
legislature that does all of its business in the light of day!
Our
candidates running for the legislature are:
David Guzy
for Senate Seat I vs. John Cowdery (R) and Sarah Scanlan (D)
Dawn Mendias
for Senate Seat M vs. Greg Garcia (G), Rick Halford (R) Incumbent, and
James Della Silva (D).
James
Price for House District 9 vs. Hal Smalley (D) Incumbent, and the Republican
nominee.
Chuck
May II for House District 10 vs. Joe Green (R) Incumbent.
Ray
Metcalfe for House District 17 vs. the Republican nominee.
Kenneth
Terry for House District 24 vs. the Republican nominee, including Pete
Kott (R) Incumbent.
Your
VOTE for a REPUBLICAN MODERATE candidate will promote change and send
a powerful message from the people that you will not accept business
as usual from the state legislature.
Your
help and your support can insure that even more REPUBLICAN MODERATE
candidates step forward in the next election.
YOUR
Republican Moderate candidate is ready to deliver for YOU!
The
REPUBLICAN MODERATE PARTY
Together we can build the future!

Moderate Party,
