ALASKANS TO VOTE ON
SAME-DAY AIRBORNE WOLF HUNTING!
Alaska Wildlife Alliance
Aug. 23, 2000
Today,
the referendum banning same-day airborne (land and shoot) wolf hunting
was certified to be on the 2000 general election ballot. Alaska citizens
will be voting November 7th on PROPOSITION 6 to reject or approve
a law passed by the state legislature which allows for the return
of land and shoot wolf hunting. This law overrides a citizens' initiative
passed in 1996 by a majority of Alaskans to ban this method of hunting.
Thanks
to the efforts of over 400 volunteers statewide, 38,000 signatures
were submitted to the Division of Elections, easily surpassing the
minimum 22,716 signatures needed to qualify.
Alaska's
Department of Fish & Game states that "the practice [of land & shoot
wolf hunting] is not a fair chase method of hunting and leads to other
abuses such as chasing and herding wolves, and shooting wolves from
the air".
Many
thanks to all of our volunteers and members who supported this effort.
Now,
we must get the message out:
Vote
YES on 6 to ban land & shoot wolf hunting!!
